So you’ve scheduled your family, maternity, or newborn portraits, but do you have a plan for how to display your family portraits? The last thing you want to do is capture these pretty moments, only to have them sit on your computer until you realize that your little one will be getting school photos for the first time or worse, senior portraits. If you’re wondering where or how to display your family photos, then this is for you.
Where to Display Portraits
Your home has many places to display your family portraits. Where do you spend the most time? Where is there a blank wall that needs a little love? I’ve seen beautiful family photos throughout the living room, stairway, hallways, dining rooms, nurseries, offices, and more! There’s really no reason not to include a family photo wherever you see fit.
First, think about the type of portraits you are capturing and ask where it would be most impactful to see those images. The family room may for obvious reasons be the best place to display your family photos. A childhood milestone photo of each of your children may make more sense along the hallway or stairway walls leading to their rooms but is still viewable in the day-to-day routine.
Personally, I love seeing maternity and newborn portraits in a nursery. Sometimes people are unsure of where to hang maternity portraits. The nursery is a great place to start or you could opt for an album. I believe both maternity and newborn photos take you back to a season of planning and excitement for this tiny human. They serve as a reminder of how much you prayed for and prepared for your baby. And on those hard days, when you’re exhausted and run down, a photo can help keep you grounded.
Ways to Display Portraits
Next, what is the best way to display your portraits? How much space you have to work with will be a factor to take into consideration. A large blank wall is a great way to display some of your most favorite images in large frames of matching sizes.
A tighter space could allow for one “feature” image of your family with smaller-sized frames to complement. The smaller frames can highlight other sweet moments from the session. Typically, an odd number of frames feels more pleasing to the eye, especially if you are creating a gallery wall of different-sized frames. If you need help with sizing and placement, let me know! Another big trend, that I love, is a framed portrait leaning against the wall on a shelf or floating shelf. Please make sure the photos are secured and won’t fall or break in reach of tiny hands.
A beautiful option is to place one framed stand-out image with meaningful or decorative nicknacks or flowers around it. Or use frames of varied sizes to create interest in height and size. Then add one or two decorative pieces to break up the images and add visual interest.
How to Display Portraits
Interested in other options but not sure how else to display family portraits? Here are a few other ways that I love. A glass box or a linen box are beautiful ways to keep the most current memories in reach to share with guests as well. Plus, this option doubles as a beautiful decor piece when the photos are not being shown while keeping the images safe from tiny finger smudges.
Again, depending on the type of portrait session, you may opt to go with an album keepsake. I love beautiful, personalized linen albums for my babies’ newborn portraits. Again, this option looks gorgeous on a bookshelf. Additionally, it can be closeby if you need a good cry because they are growing up way too fast!
