Expecting a baby can feel like non-stop planning for 9 months, but your photo session shouldn’t add to your stress. With these 5 tips to prepare for maternity photos, I hope to alleviate your stress and help you prep for a successful session.
One of the most frequently asked questions I hear from clients is when to schedule maternity photos. Typically, you’ll want to schedule maternity photos between 28-34 weeks. Every pregnancy is different and a mama’s bump can start showing very early or take a little extra time to pop. Just keep in mind that some baby’s like to come early and you won’t want to miss out on documenting this time.
If you’re on the fence about whether you should take maternity portraits or not, I encourage you to check out my top reasons why you should! If you’ve already booked your session, perfect. Now let’s make your session as perfect as possible with my 5 tips to prepare for maternity photos.
Here are the best tips to prepare for maternity photos:
1. It’s Time to Treat Yourself
You’ve been prepping and planning for this tiny human to come for months but it probably feels more like years. It’s time to take some time for yourself.
Nails
Get your nails painted or schedule some time to paint them yourself. Keep in mind that I will be taking close-ups of your hands holding your bump. I also love to focus on that pretty ring and the symbolism of the next steps that marriage and love bring. Don’t worry if your ring doesn’t fit right now – I get that too, your body is doing miraculous things. You can always share insecurities with me. Actually, it’s always better for me to know before your session if there is anything you’d like me to pay extra attention to.
Hair
Let’s be honest, you’re probably due for a trim and/or color. Your priority the last couple of months has been getting your home ready, planning a baby shower, or putting in that extra time at work before you take leave. Schedule your hair appointment for your session day and have them style you as well!
Makeup
You won’t regret treating yourself to professional makeup on your session day. At this point, you may not be feeling your best. A makeup artist will first and foremost be able to apply makeup to make you look your best for a studio or outdoor session. Most importantly, having your makeup professionally done will give you that little boost of confidence that will 100% shine through in your photos.
2. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
It’s okay to wear something you might not normally have in your closet. It may surprise you how much you love a different style on your cute baby bump even if you may not normally go for that look. Ask me about a style consultation, borrow from the client closet, or check out some of my favorite places to shop maternity dresses.
3. Prep Before Your Session
Before your session, you’ll want to make sure you stay hydrated to keep your skin fresh and energy up. Again, get plenty of rest the night before to make sure you are as fresh as possible. If you are already a mom, I know this is easier said than done! Finally, you’ll want to make sure you check your undergarments with your outfit, if you’re borrowing an item from the client closet pack a couple of nude-colored options to be safe the night before.
On session day, apply a non-greasy lotion a couple of hours prior to reduce dry spots and avoid artificial tanners that may give your skin an unnatural orange color. Don’t forget to eat before your session too!
4. Get Sentimental
Add a meaningful accessory like the first pair of tiny baby shoes you purchased. You could bring baby’s ultrasound or add drama with some loose flowers or a floral crown. Wear a piece of jewelry with special meaning. During my first maternity session, I wore my Nonie Rita’s wedding ring (my daughter’s namesake) that I will eventually pass on to her. If you have an idea for a sentimental item but are not sure how to incorporate it into your session, reach out to me about it!
5. Have Fun
Last but not least, make sure to have fun! Don’t let being a little late or the kids not listening perfectly stress you out. Tension will show in your photos. I want you to relax and let this be a memorable experience to document this beautiful new chapter of your life.
Bonus: Plan a Date for After the Session
You spent all this time looking your absolute best. Plan a date night for after your session! Have grandma pick up the kids after their part of the session. It may be one of your last chances to spend quality time with your partner pre-sleepless nights and spit up on your shirt.
