As a photographer, I spend a lot of my time researching new posing and styling ideas, better ways to serve my clients, and more. The list is endless! However, I understand that my clients aren’t researching photography and may have never seen these current trends in the industry. So today, I wanted to share some of the family photography trends I’ve noticed and/or started to implement from some of my favorite photographers across the country and get your feedback on them!
Check out the 2022 family photography trends that have caught my eye!
Client Closet
This is a trend I love and can see such a value for my clients. I know just how stressful it can be to find outfits that fit the way you want and coordinate with the whole family. Spending hours searching Pinterest, online boutiques, or local shops is a huge time commitment. Plus, it gets really expensive, really fast. THEN, you get to play the return game as your husband asks how much you’ve spent. It’s just not fun all around. That’s why I’ve started my client closet for my mamas and as it grows, it will be offered to the full family. I’ve sourced dresses ranging from $50-100 making sure they are all quality materials that will flatter mothers in every stage.
Not booking a membership option? That’s okay this is an add-on option for any session booked with me. Have questions or want to schedule a time before your session to try some on? let’s do it! After you’ve made your selection, I will help you style the rest of your family with links to easy and affordable options.
Check out these sessions entirely styled with Client Closet items: Anne & Lillian Motherhood Session, Rosson Motherhood Event, Eliana’s One Year Session, and The Showell Family Session.
Baby & Family Memberships
This is a great option for families that truly want to capture all the major milestones and never forget to schedule those yearly family portraits. Baby Plan Memberships could include 2-4 sessions, from Maternity through the baby’s first year. They take the hassle out of scheduling, with reminders from me that certain milestones are coming up. Similarly, a family membership is a great way to ensure yearly family portraits and mini sessions to capture your growing little ones and their big personalities. Memberships also include complimentary access to the client closet (see above). I’ve been working to create a membership that is both affordable and easy to understand for my clients.
Watercolor Canvas Backdrop
These backdrops from Willow Canvas are absolutely stunning. This example is from Paige Forden, based out of Denver, Colorado.
This style of backdrop creates such a romantic and intimate approach to photography. They are perfect for maternity, newborn, or family portraits. I love that they feel timeless and beautiful, capturing the magic of a family that values the bond they share. I’d love to offer this option one day to my clients!
Natural Background & Hanging Backdrop
This is a newer trend, I’ve seen on the gram! This example is from Lauren Ashley in Glendale, AZ. In Lauren’s photos, I love the pretty flowers just overhead of the beautiful fam!
I use this type of technique for my childhood milestones to create a clean white background, extending it as needed so the setup is not seen. This option allows for both the setup and the natural environment or studio to be very visible. I’m curious to see what the area that I serve thinks of this option!
A Shift from Posed to a Playful Approach
This trend has been growing for quite some time so I don’t want to limit it to 2022. Of course, every mom wants that one great photo of the whole family looking at the camera and smiling. However, more and more I see that moms want to capture their family’s interactions, personalities, and the story of their life together.
Which of these trends is your favorite? I’d love to hear your feedback in the comments or feel free to send me a message if you’d like to learn more about these 2022 photography trends.
