It’s that time of year again, and stores are releasing their holiday outfits. The time to start shopping for the holidays comes more quickly every year. Maybe you’re shopping for holiday parties but maybe you’re also planning holiday photos or mini sessions. To make your life a little easier and get you inspired for dressing the whole family, I’ve put together a couple of idea boards as a Holiday Style Guide for 2024.
Holiday Style Guide Tips
Before you begin, I want to share a few things to remember. First, think about the feeling you would like your family photos to convey. Which vibe fits your family and what you are trying to achieve: classic, timeless, romantic, fun, glam, comfy, etc. There are many different ways to capture your family this holiday season and the outfits you select will play a big part.
Once you’ve selected the vibe for your photos, the next thing you’ll want to do is shop for yourself! I always suggest that you find an outfit you love and feel confident in first and then coordinate the rest of the family around that.
Next, use your outfit to determine the dominant color of your family. If your outfit has a print or pattern, pull colors from that as an accent color for other family members then add in neutrals to fill in as needed. Neutrals could include: white, black, tan, cream, navy. If you’re nervous about patterns, check out this blog post here where I go into more details about how to choose the best prints and patterns.
Lastly, add interest to your outfits by layering, textures, and accessories. Layer a cardigan over a silky tank. Find a chunky knit sweater for your little one with a cute brown button to tie in with Dad’s brown shoes and/or belt. A sweater dress paired with black tights and shiny black shoes is a very classic look for the holiday season. Don’t forget to look for accessories like holiday scarfs and pretty bows this time of year too!
2024 Holiday Style Guide
I created these style boards to help my clients for upcoming Holiday Minis at a new studio in the Belden Village area this November. There are three different background options clients can choose from a dark and moody, light and snowy, and more of a traditional one. If you’re interested in joining in on Holiday Minis, there are only a few spots left. Reserve your November 14th date, sign up now!
Mom: Sweater, Skirt | Girl: Dress | Boy: Outfit Set | Dad: Sweater
For this style board, I choose to play with two different traditional holiday plaids. Mom has a fun plaid skirt and loose-knit sweater, you could pair this with black tights and black shoes/booties or high black boots. The boys outfit comes as a set with navy pants but I would find black pants to match the rest of the family. I love the addition of the white shirts to add another neutral to the color palette too.
I kept the dark and moody vibe with this backdrop option but I also love the idea of dressing the whole family in a light and airy options to really make the people in the photos center stage.
Mom: Dress, Scarf | Girl: Dress 1, Dress 2 | Boy: Outfit Set | Dad: Shirt
I loved this really calming palate with a flair of glam with the glitzy scarf and the girl’s metallic dresses. I kept dad and baby boy more simple. However, you could really step up the dramatics. Try a white button up and bow tie for little man, and a tan suit jacket for Dad.
This backdrop is so cute that you could make the vibe more fun with sweaters, scarves, and hats! This could create a more playful, cozy vibe with lots of giggles and cuddles.
Mom: Top, Pants | Girl: Romper, Tights | Boy: Outfit Set | Dad: Shirt
For this background, I kept the red a darker shade so as not to compete with all the wood tones. You could also go for dark green or more light neutrals in this area as well. I sourced this mom’s outfit from The Loft, one of my personal favorite places to shop. (They have a lot more holiday-style options too if you want to keep looking.) But I loved the Classic sheer blouse with the silky tank underneath. I also love a good velvet and how velvet and sheer textures pair so nicely together.
Instead of a fancy aesthetic, this would be a great backdrop for the kids to wear their holiday pajamas. They could have a good time pretending to decorate the tree or open presents.
Final Thoughts for Holiday Styling
I sourced most of my finds from Old Navy, The Loft, H&M, and Amazon. I hope that you enjoyed checking out the style boards I put together for the upcoming Holiday Minis event. And this helps to spark inspiration for you. If you are thinking about it, but haven’t claimed a spot yet, I’ve added a second day just for you! Reserve your date now. 🙂
